 {"id":17841,"date":"2023-02-24T13:15:01","date_gmt":"2023-02-24T16:15:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.glaciareschilenos.org\/?p=17841"},"modified":"2025-02-10T11:50:34","modified_gmt":"2025-02-10T14:50:34","slug":"journey-logbook-expedition-to-the-tenerife-glacier","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.glaciareschilenos.org\/en\/places\/journey-logbook-expedition-to-the-tenerife-glacier\/","title":{"rendered":"Journey logbook: expedition to the Tenerife glacier"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If one day you visit <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Puerto Natales<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> city, in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Magallanes <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">region and, at the same time, you observe with curious eyes its surroundings, besides the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">iconic <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Balmaceda <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mount, you\u2019ll be able to sight a hill with a pronounced conic formation, very similar to a volcano. That\u2019s the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tenerife <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hill, which has a height of 1650 m above sea level, and it\u2019s located north of the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prat <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mountain range, divided by the valley of the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ventisquero <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">river to the south. The hill\u2019s name comes from the first family that inhabited its foothill during the colonization of the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00daltima Esperanza<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> province which came from the<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spanish island of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tenerife<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <i>Prat <\/i>Mountain range is a mountain chain with unrivaled valleys, summits, and glaciers, where it\u2019s possible to practice a series of open-air sports. Therefore, said mountain range and its surroundings have become an attractive place fully accessible to those who find delight and enjoyment in the Patagonian landscapes<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tenerife <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hill is located 50 km northeast of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Puerto Natales<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, bordering to the east <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Porte\u00f1o <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lake. From its summit, the inhospitable <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patagonia <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and part of the southern ice field can be seen to the west, but the most noticeable by far is the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tenerife <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">glacier a small extension compared to other glaciers in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Magallanes <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">region, but of significant <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">magnitude to<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> progress in its study, contemplation, and dynamism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10995\" src=\"https:\/\/glaciareschilenoss3.s3.us-west-1.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/24124131\/IMG_20210331_184558-1-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1224\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just like that, together with my <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rope teammate <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00c1lvaro Rivera, we decided to explore this glacial ecosystem in a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">three-day field trip<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with enough equipment for glacier progression and subsequent ice climbing, starting on March 31, 2021<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Together with my companion, we entered from the northeastern slope of the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tenerife <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hill, through a delimited path by the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Senderos de Chile<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> project, at one side of the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rinc\u00f3n <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bridge on route Y-290. The place is marked by its dense vegetation of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Magellanic forests<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nothofagus<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">le\u00f1a dura<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maytenus magellanica<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">calafate<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Berberis microphylla<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Escallonia<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Escallonia rubra<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Notro<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Embothrium coccineum<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), among the most predominant species.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For about 3 hours, we gained elevation along the terraces of one of the valleys that originated from the mountain chain to which we were heading, until arriving at the camping zone, where small cirque glaciers (glaciers with semicircular upper parts) could be seen. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lenga<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">coig\u00fce<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00f1irre<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> trees, a steeper rocky terrain, vegetation dominated by the Andean desert, and a great view of the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paine<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> massif to the northeast of our location gave way to the mountains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The next day, with the first hours of daylight and a wide window of nice weather, without wind and a clear sky, we departed heading to the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tenerife <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">glacier, getting closer through the north-eastern slope of the homonymous hill, traversing its periglacial zone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We carefully went down the lateral hillock of stones and mud that are dragged by the glacier, moraine in more technical terms, due to how slippery the fleecy rock was until arriving at the lower part of the glacier, where we put on crampons to start the progression.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10989\" src=\"https:\/\/glaciareschilenoss3.s3.us-west-1.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/24123306\/20210401_145548-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1211\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once in the glacier, and before really starting the progression to its upper part, we decided to rope our climbing equipment to ourselves, since \u00c1lvaro knew about a u-shaped closed valley which was formed at the upper part of the glacier where snow accumulates (accumulation area) that he had climbed before. We wanted to check its state after the recent summer to see if it was possible to climb<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it to the summit of the mountain that houses it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10996\" src=\"https:\/\/glaciareschilenoss3.s3.us-west-1.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/24124704\/IMG_20210401_132751.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1224\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The lower part, where the glacier loses part of its mass due to evaporation and fusion, also called the ablation zone, was quite deteriorated, and weak, with particulate matter over the ice in the lateral zones, and with notorious signs of melting, a consequence of a recent hot summer season.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10992\" src=\"https:\/\/glaciareschilenoss3.s3.us-west-1.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/24123437\/IMG_20210401_110652-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1224\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We continued our progress through the glacier up the slope in search of this large <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">u-shaped closed valley<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which we began to size up as we moved forward and gained altitude through the middle of the glacier.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Further up, we were able to see clear signs of thinning in its western slope.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10998\" src=\"https:\/\/glaciareschilenoss3.s3.us-west-1.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/24125230\/IMG_20210401_144023.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1224\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We could also appreciate a series of erratic rocks scattered in the sector, very close to visible zones of detachment in its eastern slope.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After identifying and entering its accumulation zone, with the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">large u-shaped closed valley<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at 100 m, we continued bordering the great ice slope to get to it. We noticed a big crack across the full width of the glacier, the bergschrund, which we had to go across very carefully, securing ourselves with ice axes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Already at the feet of the large <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">u-shaped closed valley<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, evaluating the zone and ice conditions, we decided to climb and get out of the glacier from the mount\u2019s summit that houses it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There were 2 stretches of 60 meters each, which means the u-shaped closed valley was approximately 120 meters high. The ice was quite weak and cracked. It wasn\u2019t a hard climb, but with our backpacks and being a climb with a positive angle (less than 90\u00ba of inclination), it was somewhat uneasy to progress.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite the above, and the fact that we climbed said slope during the afternoon, we managed to put screws in place and hold meetings without a problem and we were able to enjoy the scenery and the activity itself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10999\" src=\"https:\/\/glaciareschilenoss3.s3.us-west-1.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/24125657\/IMG_20210401_170705.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1224\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Upon reaching the top, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paine <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">surprised us once more with a spectacular view. During sunset with a clear sky, we were delighted with the panoramic view of the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paine <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">massif, the southern ice field and its glaciers, the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Balmaceda <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mount, and the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chacabuco <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mountain range. That\u2019s the moment when your body relaxes and completely enjoys the present in the middle of the immensity of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patagonia<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11001\" src=\"https:\/\/glaciareschilenoss3.s3.us-west-1.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/24130219\/IMG_20210401_175957.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1224\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fact that the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tenerife <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">glacier is a smaller glacier in comparison to the other giants of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patagonia <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and has temperate characteristics means that it\u2019s in clear danger of disappearing. However, it\u2019s a privilege to be able to keep watching these landscapes in the middle of a complex environmental scenario. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11000\" src=\"https:\/\/glaciareschilenoss3.s3.us-west-1.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/24130200\/20210401_180823-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2496\" height=\"1872\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even though on this occasion we took advantage of this ice formation for sport and recreation purposes, we always had in mind the value of the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tenerife <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">glacier in relation to its ecosystem and as an integral part of a quite frail balance to all forms of life that exist in this environment.
