WHY IS IT ESSENTIAL TO PROTECT GLACIERS IN CHILE?
-
Chile has more than 26 thousand glaciers from north to south, totaling a surface area of 21,009 km2.
-
Representing 80% of the glaciers in South America and 11% in the world.
-
Glaciers are an important source of freshwater and deliver about 50% of the water of the rivers in the north and center of the country in periods of drought.
-
Acting as climate regulators, reflecting solar radiation and cooling the planet.
-
Glaciers are threatened by climate change and without a protection law, they are at the mercy of the damage caused by industrial activities such as mining.
About us
Who we are
Fundación Glaciares Chilenos (FGC) is a non-profit organization that works with the purpose of educating, disseminating and protecting the more than 26 thousand glaciers located in the national territory, through the development of educational programs and visibility of scientific content on glaciers.
Education
Acknowledging the problem is the first step to finding a solution, that is why we bring content about glaciers and their importance to schools, universities and organizations.
Divulgation
We bring Chilean glaciers closer through the dissemination of scientific and academic information, through social networks, articles on our website, seminars, talks, etc.
Protection
We promote the creation of protection laws for glaciers, mountain ecosystems and biodiversity.
